I’ve never felt an explosion of pure joy on stage like I did last night. This is what happened at the end of our show in Tenerife when the security could no longer hold back the enthusiastic Sierra Leoneans in the audience from joining us on stage. The whole night they had been jumping up one by one, and the “Spanish authorities” kept intervening to pull them off. I don’t know the journeys that brought these people, or what their lives are like whole they are here. All I know is that somewhere between Tripoli’s “slave markets” and Berlin’s pedestal of fetishization of African culture (vinyl and such), there are regular people just wanting to be free to be their true selves, without the limitations that our global society has put on them, on us. I wish every story about African migrants that went out in the international press could link to this video so the world can know that whats really at stake in this geopolitical confusion we find ourselves in is ultimately, simply all of our happiness.
