I’m new to New York, so I learn by looking at maps.  I keep a map of the Brooklyn bus network above my bed.  It’s the thing I look at most.

When I was a kid, I would entertain myself on road trips by following along with my finger where I thought we were in the car.  I would correct myself as we passed exits and landmarks.  Today I read blogs about maps and am taking a course on making them.
